Brave New World #2

Ther are have been several questions that have come to my mind while reading Brave New World. One of these questions is imilar to what many people are probably asking, and that has to do with running out of soma.

Question # 1.) How would  someones feelings toward another change if they ran out of soma?

I hypothesized that if someone were to run out of soma there usually feelingles feelings with little emotin towards other wuld become like that of a normal person in todays societies and perhaps a little stronger because of the lack of it for so long. All that emotion has to be building up inside them, all those real emotions and expressions. Ifound support for this hypothesis on pg. 126 where  it says about Lenina toward the white man at the peblo; "Lenina was smiling at him ; such a nice-looking boy, she was thinking, and a really beautiful body." I believe if Lenina was  on her Soma she would not think and feel this way about the man.

Question #2.) Could someone from the Onestate survive in the outside world and if so in what conditions would they be living?

One would think that someone from the oestate being so reliant on soma and brainwashed to believe and behave in strict ways and thinking that th Onestate is the way the world was supposed to be that living outside of the Onestate would drive them crazy, they would not know how to survive , or they would become ill from withdraw of all their meicines and behaviors in the onestate. I hypothesized that someone from the onestate that moved out would kind of go crazy and go in a downward piral and not survive or conform an outside society to be like the Onestate. Ifound a possibility of what might happen to a person once from the onestate who moved out in pages 127-131. In these pages about the young man that Lenina and Bernard meet at the pueblo they go int his mother's house and are immediately disgusted at the condition of the house and the women and her hygiene. This is a direct example of what could happen to someone who moved out of the onestate.

Question #3.)This is a question to whch I so far couldn't really find any bit of an answer unless I missed it it, but; Why do the people in the onestate live very healthy lives with almost no impairments  and then suddenly die? This came up on page 120 wher Lenina and Bernard see the very old man climbing the ladder at the pueblo, and Bernard says, "youth almost unimpaired till sixty, and then crack! the end." I hypothesize that it was maybe because of so much medication and brainwash but I am still unsure.

Brave new world entry #1

In Brave Ne World they have created conformity by genetically regulating all human embryods before they are born so that they will conform to fit into a cetrtainsocial class that consists of virtually exactly alike people physically and mentally.

They have reduced conflict in regards to religion relationships and individual rights simply by eliminatingthose three things. In "Brave New World" there are no religions, norelationships, and no individual rights therefore there can be no conflict over swomething that doesn't exist.

In "Brave New World" they have forced happiness and conformity through using the drug soma to make the people happy andforget any troubles they are having, also through their hypotizing recordings that they listen to while they sleep is how they force them to be happy and conformed.

I believe that this "Brave New World" society is technically a utopia because all people are happy because they take soma that maks them  forget anything that is unhappy. Also there is no conflict because theres nothing to have conflict over and theres plenty of leisure time to make them feel free. So overall I would say A Brave New World" is a utopia but it's alsmost like it's a forced utopia.

Ethnography

The benefits of an emic perspective is that the reader or listener can see what reallt goes on inside the culture and their leaders and what everythimg really means.

An etic perspective can show how something seems to look and be, and shows what everybody else thinks about it.

I believe an emic perspecctive is better because it gives the best perspective by going inside the heads and inside what actually goes on in the culture.

Othering

The west would create the idea of the east as the "other" in order to make the west seem normal and the best. Othering unifies the country by saying we are right and normal while the east is weird and wrong. Othering is a big part of our world today and happens not only between countries but cultures and sports and groups and clubs. We other so that we may feel right and better about ourselves and we can't see everyone as equals.

2+2=5 by Radiohead

This song is lyrically talking about how when you don't pay attention the world has changed and is changing to completely different ways than what it was. It's about an opposite world that doesn't mak sense.

The music helps push the message by being very different from what usual music sounds like.

It's an allusion to 1984 because 2+2=5 isn't right but if people don't know what really is right they will think 5 is the correct answer just how in 1984 nothing is factually correct but since nobody knows the correct facts they are forced to believe the false ones.

Love Language

1. Some of my assumptions were that the girl was very shy and she had some sort of impairments.

2. This is a cultural conflict because the deaf culture and the speaking culture : the conflict is that the guy wants to talk to her but he cant because she is deaf.

3. The external conflict is the man having trouble commmunicating with the girl.

4. An internal conflict is the man verse his conscious and shyness to talk to the girl.

5. The conflict was resolved by the notes that lead to hm gettting to listen to her song and realize that she was deaf.

Rain on the scarecrow

This song is about a family man who grew up on this farm and gave everything he had, blood, sweat, and tears only to lose it to some bad person.

This song might adress poverty or lack of freedom , and maybe sickness

Mellencamp's use of iagery/symbolism is somewhat realistic and symbolic.

Mellencamp uses a generally negative connotation in all his words to make the song sound sad.

"The Egg"

1- The type of man that the narrator's father was before he married was a very nice, cheerful kind man who was very passionate and loving. The changes that he went through after marriage were changes of his mind and emotions. He wasn't as cheerful and happy, and kind and was unsatisfied.

2.-The narrator doesn't really like chickens, after growing up with them , he kind of hates them  because of bad memories with them and that they are useless and a waste.

3.-He claims to have had trouble, even as a child because he grew up on a gloomy farm witnessing the cycles of life and death.

4.-The "grotesques" in the story play a role of that showing how his father tried to entertain by exploiting things to gain money. Metaphor for use of the lower class.

Friendship in America

Some reasons that Americans are perceived this way is because Americans are friendly at first , very friendly, because they care about their ego and what people think  about them , so once they think you like them  they don't need to grow the friendship. Also Amercans like to be independent, and just because they are independent  doesn't mean they aren't friends it just means thet don't spend as much time  with friends  for every little thing. Also Americans move and change a lot so their so their friendships change, and they never have time to grow their friendships, so it seems they don't value friendship.

This land is your land by Woodie Guthrie

1.- Guthrie's message in this song is a collectivist message because in the song he talks about how the land "this land was made for you and me" meaning it was made for everybody to share together.

2.-I find this song to be anti-government because  the government has so many restrictions on the people and the land that we can't  access it, and be free and share it . When the song looks at the land wanting ot to be free and for everybody.

Yale head scarf muslim video

I believe that this is an external conflict because there is conflict between the u.s and Muslim people over covering one's body up for religious purposes.

Globalization creates conflict when one culture and/or religion disagrees with another cultures ways or beliefs. This conflict is created because of the strive for cultures to dominate others and have their ways. She means globalization has only flown in one direction because of the western world being the standard for everybody else, and nobody else having a say.

The benefit she says that we do get from globalization is role models from the west and in movies and media that set standards and examples on how to live and behave.

She mentions the Quran  and the constitution.

Utopia

In my own words a utopia is a perfect peaceful world where conflict is nonexistent and everyone and everything is happy.

My ideal world would be a world where money and laws don't exist because everybody shares everything, and everybody loves everybody. This world would have challenges and competition but those challenges and competitions would be healthy and good for everybody.

The soundtrack that would play to my ideal world would be the beach boys sounds of summer because it is an always happy but chill album that would go along with the behavior and lifestyle of the people in my ideal world.

Built to Spill "you were right" claims

The lyrical content of this song was intended to be sad and not rhyme because the lyrics have words such as depression, mess, this is the end, and wrong. They are all words associated with sadness, and also there's no rhyme pattern to the song.

The musical content of this song uses a background of drawn out distorted tones that make the song sad because the tones are almost like a sigh of sadness and give you that tired sad feeling

The songs overall effectiveness is good and very sad because of the sad lyrics, no rhyming, and sad musical tones.

Shame by the A Bros.

The subject of the song is shame and how the artist is ashamed for breaking someone's heart. The tone obviously is shameful, but also a sad plea, kind of begging.

The words that push the tone are cold, please, and overwhelming. Please is repeated i the song many times which supports how he is pleading and kind of begging for the emotional pain to stop. Cold pushes the sadness of the song how the heart is cold. Overwhelming pushes the tone because it shows how he's so ashamed and had so much hurt that is overwhelming.

dialects

Voice in literature is someone's style and tone in their writing piece.

When writing I believe a person's voice is already there. They may change it a little to sound more intelligent, but it's still the same overall voice; its just utilized sometimes more or less, so it's both.

They talk around a subject because they are easy slow-going people, and not in a rush, so they use it as a social opportunity. We can tell a writers voice, tone, views, and opinions from the way he  or she approaches and handles a subject.

Voice is important in writing because it helps to set and effect the tone setting, and images of the writing. It's what makes the writing unique.

Batting Clean up and striking out soapstoned

Subject- The subject of this article is the subject of how males and females notice and enjoy completely different things that the opposite sex will never be able to understand. This is supported by How Barry talks about how women notice the tiniest amount of dirt and men don;t notice dirt until it piles up. Also how the men watch the world series while the women couldn't care one bit, and how women enjoy shopping and men enjoy sports.

Occasion-  This article was written in 1988 by Dave Barry out of Dave Barry's greatest hits. You can tell that  this article was written in modern America because there's t.v and baseball proof of America and modern technology. This gives a modern  view of this subject and it's accurate.

Audience- I believe that the audience of this article are adult males and females. As we read the stories and facts are all about male and female adults curious in why males and females can love each other so much but have completely different ideas of fun and ideas.

Purpose- I believe that Barry wrote this essay to point out a fact and somewhat of a question. This was the purpose. This point was that women notice things and do this men would never notice or do, and vice verse. This i supported in the article by the first line; "The primary difference between men and women is that women can see extremely small quantities of dirt." Although this is true and supports the purpose what it really stands for the differences in behavior ideas and enjoyments between men and women.

Speaker-Dave Barry, proclaimed funniest man in America, believes that as the speaker of this piece tha men and women are so different in ways that the two will never understand. this is supported by the line from the essay saying; "The opposite side of the dirt coin, of course is, sports. This s an area where men tend to feel very sensitive and women tend to be extremely callous.

Tone-Dave Barry expresses a very humorous and observatory attitude about how men and women are so different in aspects. These attitudes are expressed by his jokes about the men of Pompeii and how women notice the tiniest bit of dirt. This tone allows fun and enjoyment and curiosity in reading this article.

Kandinsky vs. Pollock

After viewing Kandinsky's and Pollock's paintings I concluded that
I like Pollock'spainting best because it's very interesting to look at how all the designs were created and how they mixed by the color he used.

Kandinsky's painting in my opinion is more pleasing to look at though. This is because it's more colorful, and we like seeing different shapes and geometry mixed together with color.

Sign language-short film

The single effect you get from the short film is a lesson to be optimistic and appreciate the little thingds right in front of you.

Three specific examples that led to this single effect were 1- Ben was smiling and happy as his fellow sign holders looked dull and unhappy 2-How he said it was beautiful and he noticed the little details. 3- At the end as he packs up optimistic for a sendoff, when it seems he won't get one he is still happy, but finally he does get his sendoff and  to talk to the girl right in front of him.
If i could change one aspect it would be to have something unfortunate to happen to Ben, but he would still be optimistic This would make the effects emphasized more.

"Good old desk" soapstoned

The subject of good old desk is not actually the desk but the desk is a metaphor for God. As Harry Nilson sings about how good his desk is to him.
There is no certain occasion of this song only that it was written around the 1970s.
The audience of this song seems to be a believer in God or perhaps someone who doesn't and needs encouragement and faith.
The purpose of this song is to tell the audience about how good and great God is and that he is always sturdy and will always be ther for the good.
The speaker of this song is Harry Nilson a very famous singer who even the beatles looked up to.
The tone of this song is very grateful and faithful towards good old desk G.O.D.

"Shooting an Elephant" By:George Orwell SOAPSToned

Subject- I believe that the subject of "Shooting an Elephant" by George Orwell is not necessarily the process of shooting an elephant but the subject is  that the British police officer is  willing to disregard his morals in order to preserve what is left of his dignity, self image, and ego in Burma.  Occasian- This occasian is the occasian of shooting an elephant which takes place in Moulmein, in lwer Burma sometime in 1936 Audience- I believe the audience of this fictional essay could be the British officers in Burma at that time, and or the audience could be the British tyrants r even just a person who went through a similar experience where they had to disregrd their moral values. Purpose- I believe that the purpose of this essay is to tell about how in life we all fae scenarios where we disobey our morals in order to stay cool and that many times when we think we are "cool" and on top in control  that we are being controlled by this "cool". Speaker- The speaker of this essay is George Orwell but he is speaking as the voice of the British officer. Tone-The tone of this essay seems to be a helpless tone where the narrrator seems helpless as he speaks because he is picked on by the natives and also by his situation with his morals and the elephant.

"Across the universe" the Beatles

Three images from this song that I identified are from the "universe" the image of space and stars also the images of people laughing and ran from "pouring rain".

No, noe of these images are symbols in context.

One image that I know to be a symbol is Jesus on the cross. It is the image of him dying and a symbol of Christianity

"Inspiration of Information" by: Shuggie Otis

The overall feel of this song is a groovy, relaxed, very happy mood. The rhythm and electronic beat of the song is upbeat and a moderate fast tempo. The musicians had to make choices on what instruments to use, the tempo and rhythm of the song, and they had to review and revise it many times.

"Semadores" by: Diego Rivera

I believe the subject of the painting is the hard work of farming in the older Hispanic countries. The occasion of this painting seems to be in a Hispanic country (most likely Mexico) around early to middle 1900's. The audience of this painting most likely the middle to lower working class people. The purpose of the painting is to show the toil and hardship of not only farming but all the tough jobs the lower class take to make ends meet. The speaker is Diego Rivera. The tone of this painting is positive out of respect to the hardworking people all over the world. The artist wanted the audience to think about the hard work and toil of the harvest. He used a strenuous stretchy type of stroke which emphasized stress, also darker and neutral colors. The workers are also positioned away. The style as I mentioned is unrealistic and stressed.

wilcos song creation process

Wilcos approach to creating a song starts with everyone in the band playing together to create that one song, then they can take that song apart and process it to make the song better and change it , or to create a new song from it.

My creative process for writing is first brainstorming and reading over or "researching" what I'm writing about. Once i have my main point or idea I form a thesis and topics for each paragraph and the conclusion. Once I have all of my thoughts together I put them in the order I'm going to write them on paper for a rough guide "draft". I write down my thesis, then I write the topic sentence for each paragraph and conclusion. Once I have this I begin my rough final draft. After that is finished, I edit and proofread , then complete the final draft.

what is nostalgia

Nostalgia is something that stands out for someone from the past, and a longing for someone or something from the past.
When I hear this music images from the movie grease come to my mind  especially when they are dancing. It also reminds me of the movie "Home alone" when he's singing in front of the mirror. It also reminds me of "The Sandlot", and an old movie where they're at the school dance or the ice cream parlor. Overall it reminds me of older happy times before I was born, and when my parents were younger.
When I think of my childhood the images that pop into my head are of ridin my bikes and tricycles. Going to Julius Marks. Playing on the playground, toys, kool aid, pizza, and chuck E. Cheeses.Sounds of kids laughing and screaming, sounds of plastic wheels rolling on concrete, feelngs of riding bikes, hot summer sun , barefoot, and going to the pool with cousins.

pinch of poverty painting

The major contributing factors to poverty are the economy, population to jobs ratio, vicious cycle of former familly generations in poverty stay in poverty, children, and government.

In the painting  "A pinch of poverty" the artist portrays poverty in a positive light by showing although the family is poor the girl has bright  flowers and is trying to make money and make the most of it.

I believe that the artists message is that povery affects all people and is real, and even families and little kids have to do what they can to survive and that poverty isn't all that bad.

The artists uses a realistic style f painting to portray how poverty is real. He or she also uses color contrast with light and dark contrast , using the bright yellow to show the good in poverty and the dark greys to show the consand realism.

poverty and child labor

After reading the articles and understanding views from multiple perspectives I am hesitant to say with my limited knowledge that I disagree with Divakaruni. After considering multiple scenarios and the effects they would have I decided the pros of the bill would outweigh the pros of not having the bill. Although Divakaruni does have a plausible point that the bill would take many children out of work which would mean out of food and starving on the street as well as a burden to their families. I also put into play the fact that the U.s is a primary consumer of these products produced by children. Without their primary consumer these companies would surely fail. So the next option would be to hire adults to work for them, and chances are many of these adults may be the parents of the previous child workers. In turn the parents would be making money and the children would be able to perform jobs the parents previously had such as farming. Although I may be completely wrong with this. I believe if it were to work this way the bill would be very positive.
I would also say that I disagree with Peter Singer in his essay.I believe that it is all in a chain of events similar to the food chain and sudden donations of money for something we aren't necessarily obliged to could upset economic systems  and other people's lives. I believe this money should go directly to something that would fix these problems once and for all by fixing governments and starting farming and education to these people in need. i Do not believe that200 dollars saves a childs life. It goes to the organization and then where does it go. straight to the kid/ is it  split up? thissystem is flaawed and needs major override.

Round and Round

In the song "Round and Round" the musical facts that i noticed during the song and wrote down were  ; the background chorus singers used harmony , and the whole song generally throughout had a medium slow tempo.
My opinion about the song was that it is a happy relaxing song that seems to be talking about the past good times. It is very interesting and I enjoyed it because of the chorus lines and the relaxing tempo.
The musical facts that I chose influence my opinion because there was harmony in the song that I enjoyed when the chorus singers sung together and that the tempo was medium slow it influenced how I believe it is relaxing and happy.
